This hole is underneath a layer of lace - this is looking at the tear from the backside. You can't see it from the front. These are the two rips/tears at the bottom of the dress
A small hole on part of the tucked area
A hole on the sleeve
I hope to start on repairs sometime in the near future.
I am a wife, a mother and a grandmother. I have sewn since I was 14 years old, but my love for sewing was re-kindled when my grandchildren came along. Needlework is in my blood. My mother and grandmother passed down a love for all things handmade. My mother made most of our clothes when we were growing up and now hand quilts from piecing the quilt, quilting and even the binding, nothing is done by machine. My grandmother sewed on a tredle sewing machine which was passed down to me. I am even fortunate enough to have a dedicated sewing room in which it sits.
Even with rips and tears, it is a beautiful gown!
ReplyDeleteNonna, do you have MP's Grandmother's Hope Chest. There is a similar CG that is dated 1880.
ReplyDeleteI have an 1870 CG. I used silk organza and sandwiched the silk on either side of the worn parts/tears.~janet g
